The Pierre Shale formation was deposited during the Paleogene and Cretaceous periods about 70 million years ago. We explored the Niwot Ridge tundra plateau, speckled with wildflowers of every shape and color, looked down on the layered blue mountain ranges below, while snow-tipped peaks gazed at us from still-greater heights.
