The further from the trailhead, or the less popular the trail, the more snowshoes are needed. If it is windy or there is new snow, tracks can disappear and you could lose your way unless you have good route-finding skills and proper equipment

In the winter, the trail around the lake is often suitable for walking in boots, or as a short snowshoe or ski. You also may find the road closed due to weather in early June and September/October.
