The Pierre Shale formation was deposited during the Paleogene and Cretaceous periods about 70 million years ago. The views from the top and on the way up, above the tree line, are outstanding, with meadows, lakes, and rolling mountains extending out into the distance. The area is so open and exposed that you have a good chance of seeing wildlife, particularly bighorn sheep.
