In the summer, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage Railway is one of the town's main tourist attractions. You may not know that our mountain makes its own weather, so it is not uncommon to have snow in July or August at the top of Trail Ridge Road. Such weather will only last for a few hours to a day, but if you are planning to cross over Trail Ridge Road, weather may hamper your travel. The low growth of dense trees is called krummholz, which may become well-established and live for several hundred to a thousand years old.[72]
